Fantasy and the Modern World

HUMA 3003

Course description

In fantasy, the outside is an externalization, a metaphor, of the internal. Magic is perhaps the most fruitful metaphor available to this kind of fiction. Artists in the fantasy genre use the metaphor of magic as a means of discussing the ways in which human beings are greater than the sum of their parts. This course considers fantasy as a rich study of social, cultural and intellectual developments.
