Flightlab

Flightlab (AVIA1002) introduces the practical aspects of flight from the cockpit of an aircraft thereby enhancing the theoretical portion of our three-year Aviation Management diploma program. The course consists of six hours of in-flight instruction in a four-seat aircraft (along with three other students and your pilot) as well as two hours of ground briefing.

Flightlab will run concurrently with Aviation Orientation (AVIA1000) in Semester one. Aviation聽Orientation is the theory component of FLIGHTLAB. Upon completion of this course, students聽will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • explain aircraft documentation and identify aircraft pre-flight procedures;
  • describe weather factors relating to flight safety procedures;
  • outline various air maneuvers and emergency procedures;
  • explain basic instrument navigation techniques;
  • associate weight and balance calculations with aircraft performance calculations;
  • explain VOR and ADF tracking; and
  • verbally demonstrate aircraft handling procedures.

Advanced Flightlab (AVIA2001) continues and enhances the principles introduced in Flightlab. It聽applies VFR navigation theory of the program through cross-country flight and reinforces聽navigation and navigation aid concepts from the cockpit of an aircraft. The course consists of five聽hours of in-flight instruction (along with three other students and your pilot) as well as two hours of聽ground briefing. Advanced Flightlab聽will run concurrently with Navigation and Navigation聽Aids (AVIA2002) in semester four. Navigation and Navigation Aids is the theory component of聽Advanced Flightlab. Upon completion of this course, students will have demonstrated the聽ability to:

  • prepare VFR cross country flights;
  • participate in a VFR cross country flight;
  • participate in an IFR cross country flight; and
  • explain the operation of instruments used in IFR navigation.

After completing both FLIGHTLAB and Advanced FLIGHTLAB, students will have received a聽total of four hours of ground training and 11 hours of in-flight training. The in-flight training in both聽courses will be with three other students, plus the pilot, in a four-seat aircraft. The combined 11聽hours of in-flight training is designed to enhance training in a cockpit environment at a聽significantly reduced cost than that of a student obtaining this level of training privately.

Your cost

The cost of FLIGHTLAB is $610 and includes flight and ground transportation. This cost is聽included in your total first-year fees which are due in June. The cost for Advanced FLIGHTLAB聽is estimated at $610 and will be due at the same time as your semester four fees (due in March 鈥撀爌rice subject to change without notice).

If you currently have a PPL, commercial pilot鈥檚 licence or have completed more than 22.5 hours聽of flight time toward your PPL, you may apply for an exemption from FLIGHTLAB and聽Advanced FLIGHTLAB. In addition, if you have passed the Transport Canada ground school聽test, you may apply for an exemption from Aviation Orientation. Exemptions will be granted on聽an individual basis. Please contact the Aviation Management co-ordinator at聽705.728.1968, ext.聽1419 for more details.

Ground transportation

Transportation to the airport from the college is included in the FLIGHTLAB and Advanced聽FLIGHTLAB fees. There will be no weekend flying required unless weather conditions dictate a聽change in the established flight timetables.

Photography (PHOT)小优短视频 Chevron

Software requirements

Students will need to purchase their own (Adobe CC). Although we are planning to offer some remote and onsite access to this software via the downtown labs, lab times available may be limited during peak periods and there is a potential for onsite access to be restricted due to public health considerations or other disruptions.

Computer requirements

While lab-based instruction for the Photography program normally takes place on Mac computers, Adobe CC software operates on both Mac and Windows platforms, so students may choose to use either a Mac- or Windows-based desktop or laptop at home.

Adobe CC software is resource intensive and requires more than entry-level hardware to operate efficiently. Below are some recommended computer configurations for both Mac and Windows based desktops and laptops.

Additional storage recommendation

In addition to the basic computer requirements listed below, Photography students need to plan for additional hard drive storage as still image and video file sizes can be quite large. It is recommended that students have at least two 2TB hard drives: one for data storage and an additional hard drive for use as a backup. These are minimum requirements; two 4TB hard drives would be preferred.

Memory card access

All students in the Photography program will also require an appropriate memory card reader for the card used in their camera. While some computers will come with this built in, others will require a peripheral device that can be plugged into one of the ports on the computer. Please refer to your camera and computer documentation to determine these requirements.

External monitor for laptop

If using a laptop as a primary computer for photo editing, it is highly recommended to use an external monitor as this will make it easier for editing, as well as allow for enhanced colour management.
